A team of Koledari come by our blok on Sunday

Koledari, traditional teams of young men who go around the neighborhood on Christmas Eve singing and dancing, are a Bulgarian tradition.  This group, most of whom looked like Roma, came down our street Sunday.   They were performing for handouts.  We gave them a couple of lev.

Note the large round loaf of bread (pitka) held by the last dancer. The "animal" figure speaks no words, but makes animal noises. Note the man on left -- leader of the group -- holding a wine flask.
